This phenomenal 40 year old is a rarity from The Macallan. This 2016 release came into being as a result of the intuition and instinct shown by Master Whisky Maker, Bob Dalgarno.
In 2006 he and his team were crafting the annual release of the 30 Year Old Sherry Oak, which involved combining the finest spirit from 27 specially selected casks into nine marrying casks.
Dalgarno's acumen led to a tenth cask being filled, which was laid back down and allowed to continue to mature and develop. When it reached 35 years of age in 2011 it was assessed again, and a mindful decision was made to allow the whisky to continue to mature and develop character. Finally, at 40 years of age, the time had come.
